At an art exhibition in Moscow, which took place in 1854, Princess Maria Nikolaevna visited. She then liked some of the work of young Alexei Savrasov. And then the princess, as president of the Imperial Academy of Arts, announced to the artist an invitation to her residence.
The suburban representation was located between Peterhof and Oranienbaum. It was in this picturesque place, on the border between Russia and Finland, that Alexey Kondratievich's new unique paintings were born. Among them, the work “View in the vicinity of Oranienbaum” can be distinguished.
The viewer is presented with a landscape. The corner of nature captured by the artist’s attention seems familiar, but nevertheless there is some mystery in these outlines. Muted, even gloomy shades of the canvas create an atmosphere of mystery. It seems as if ancient myths arose here and fabulous events took place. Finnish nature is harsh, stately, mysterious. The painter accurately conveyed her unique atmosphere.
In the foreground are two huge centuries-old boulders. Over the centuries, they are overgrown with moss and grass. Above the boulders rise branches of a sprawling old oak. It is covered with dense light green foliage. On the left side of the picture is a tremendous stump. One can only guess whether nature itself or the person in power over it cut down a tree that once blossomed in its place.
In the center of the picture - in a clearing - a female figure is guessed. Even further - on the horizon - stretches the sea surface, with a white sailing ship whitening in its depths. The blue sky is almost entirely tarnished by clouds and gray clouds. But sunlight still breaks through them, filling the picture that appeared before the viewer with warm light.
The landscape of Oranienbaum was acquired by the Tretyakov, and placed in his Moscow gallery. This painting gave Savrasov the title of academician.
